Karen Fowler arrives at the local community college to teach a class and finds a dead body in the car parked next to her. It turns out to be the body of a Chinese exchange student whose only interest seemed to be working with a professor on secret, high-tech drone research, besides the many love liaisons she seems to have.

Detective Rebecca Speck initially enlists Karen simply to provide background information on the student and the college, but soon Karen becomes entangled in the case. Although she's used to teaching, she discovers she's got a lot to learn when it comes to assisting a murder investigation, and one wrong move could mean the end of more than her tenure.

As if the international intrigue wasn't enough, Karen struggles with the loss of her soul mate husband, who was killed in the line of duty. Can she manage to crack the case and catch someone's eye at the same time?
